Summer Energy Savings Can Be Yours

These energy saving tips will help you lower your energy costs this summer without sacrificing your comfort. Summers are long, hot and humid in this region, and putting these tips into practice will save you money.

Have your air conditioner or heat pump serviced. A clean and adjusted HVAC system uses less energy and runs dependably. A licensed HVAC technician will check the refrigerant level, oil the motors and clean all the parts, including the electrical connections. During the service call, ask the technician if you’d save energy by using a programmable thermostat. Turing the temperature up when you’re away will save energy, and a programmable thermostat eliminates all the effort.

Check the air filter monthly. Nothing lowers the energy efficiency of a cooling system faster than a dirty air filter. Dust on the filter slows the air flowing through the air handler and it takes longer to cool your home. A clogged filter also contributes to premature part failure. Staying on top of the air filter’s condition is one of the most effective energy saving tips.

Keep an eye on the outdoor condenser. Remove any vegetation within 24 inches of the condenser and hose it down periodically to remove dust. Never place anything on the top of the condenser that would block the air flowing through it.

Use fans. Moving air always feels cooler because the moisture on your skin dries faster. You might find you can raise the thermostat several degrees to achieve the same comfort by turning on a ceiling or floor fan. You’ll save even more energy by turning them off when you leave a room.

Most of these energy saving tips focus on cooling systems because it’s your home’s largest energy consumer. To learn more about cutting cooling costs through maintenance and upkeep, contact Beyer Boys, proudly serving San Antonio homeowners.
