Getting Rid of Energy Vampires in Your Residence

Are you familiar with energy vampires? No, we don’t mean the negative folks who leave you feeling emotionally drained and looking for the nearest exit. When it comes to your home, an energy vampire is actually an inefficient practice that drains money from your pocketbook. Read on for ways to keep these vampires from sapping your home’s energy and driving up your utility bills.

Some of the worst offenders:

  • Cell phone chargers. How many of these do you have in your home? Do you keep them plugged in all the time, even when there’s no electronic device attached to them? If so, be aware that as long as they’re plugged in, they are drawing power. True, it’s not a lot of wasted energy, but when you look around and realize how many other energy drainers are drawing power while not “on,” it may give you pause.
  • Cable/satellite box, DVR or DVD player. Now here’s a device that does draw a significant amount of power. Even when turned off, they consume energy. A cable box alone that is never turned off could use as much as 20 watts of electricity a year. This same box with DVR capability can cost you $40 or more over a year in wasted power.
  • Some other typical energy sappers:

    • MP3 players
    • Coffee makers on standby
    • Any device that turns on by remote control
    • Devices with standby light or clock (electric ranges, radios and microwave ovens, for instance)
    • Computers, routers, modems

Pulling the Plug on Energy Vampires

The best way to stop power drains in your home is to unplug everything that’s not in use, such as cell phone chargers and video game systems.

Plug TVs, cable/satellite boxes and DVD players, as well as all computer electronics, into power strips. Turn the power strip off when the equipment is not in use. Smart power strips will turn themselves off when the devices are not in use.
