Don’t Let Your Bills Take You Under — Learn to Save Water

Because of the drought, the San Antonio Water System (SAWS) has put restrictions in place regarding how and when residents use water. Taking steps to learn to save water not only saves this resource, but it’ll also lower this utility bill. These tips can help you cut your usage:

Indoors

  • Fix all the leaky faucets you have, particularly if their hot water faucet leaks, since you pay to heat the water first and it’s wasted down the drain. A leaking toilet may waste 200 gallons of water daily.
  • Replace toilets built before 1992 with low water use toilets, or look for the WaterSense label. Toilet flushing uses the most water in the average household. WaterSense is the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s latest labeling program to make it easy for consumers to identify the products that use the lowest amount.
  • Install low-flow shower heads. Next to toilet flushing, showering consumes a lot of water. Low flow devices help you save water and the energy to heat it.
  • Learn to save water by washing full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine only. When either of these appliances needs replacing look for those that use less water, typically stated on its labeling. Front loading washers use less and some dishwashers now have load size settings.

Outdoors

  • Redirect the washing machine’s drainpipe outdoors to use as grey water for your landscaping. Effective laundry detergents are easily available that don’t contain any chemical products that harm plants and soil. A plumber can help you set up a system to capture and hold the water. Dish and dishwasher soaps contain harmful chemicals that can contaminate your soil.
  • Consider replacing turf with drought-tolerant plants or turn lawn areas into hard surfaces. Xeriscaping your yard can offer the same lushness as one that uses water-hungry plants.
