Different HVAC systems have different locations of filter. Generally, a removable filter is situated in the access door the return air duct next to the furnace or indoor unit. The access door could be located in the basement, utility closet, crawl-space, garage, or attic. In older models the filter is present inside the furnace itself. Some systems have a central filter grille installed in a wall or ceiling.
